Bernard Guillas, Chef
Maitre Cuisinier de France, Bernard Guillas is the executive chef /owner of Chefluv Inc :
A company Creating a philosophy of couture modern cuisine rooted in gastronomic exploration.
Chef Bernard has an extensive repertoire as an Executive Chef, Food and beverage Director at many historic restaurants, exclusive private club, hotels and resorts.
Born into a family of farmers, butchers, bakers, and restaurateurs, Bernard was influenced by his daily exposure to food. He began his formal training at a 2 ** Michelin Restaurant , Le Bretagne in Questembert, France with the legendary Georges Paineau. Jumping continents, Guillas worked at Maison Blanche restaurant in Washington DC under Pierre Chambrin, former White House executive chef. Bernard moved to San Diego as the Chef de Cuisine of the Grant Grill, located in the historic US Grant Hotel and was the Executive Chef of the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club Inc and the landmark AAA 4-diamond Marine Room restaurant.
Bernard shares his culinary passion and philosophy by uniting cultures through flavors, on television, radio, and teaching around the world.
An avid culinary explorer, Bernard has a roster of impressive credits that include appearances on The Today show, Martha Stewart Radio, James Beard House, Food Arts Magazine and the Discovery Channel’s Great Chefs of the World television series. Bernard was named Chef Magazine’s Chef of the Year and San Diego’s Best Chef numerous times and was been inducted in to the Académie Culinaire de France and the Disciples of Escoffier International.
Bernard is the author of 2 cookbooks, Flying Pans, Two Chefs one World; winner of the IACP book of the year in the categories of Chefs and Restaurants and the People’s Choice award, and Two Chefs One Catch, A Culinary Exploration of Seafood.
Bernard was inducted into the Académie Culinaire de France, the Disciples of Escoffier International, Academy Brillat-Savarin Medaille de Merite, Chef Magazine’s Chef of the Year and San Diego’s Best Chef.
Bernard promotes sustainability and plays an active role in supporting and promoting his local community. His philanthropic interests benefit local and international charities while traveling extensively throughout the world promoting the San Diego, California and Moab Utah region.
Lilian Gaffney, Chef
After graduating from culinary school over 25 years ago, I began my career as a personal chef, then went into the food service arena which gave me a strong catering background and the opportunity to work for organizations like the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as high profile personalities such as President Obama, author Anne Rice and many more. After closing my restaurant in 2009, I made the choice to go back to being a personal chef, it’s a decision I do not regret.

Galina Kiep, Bassoon
Galina attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she studied with both Bernard Garfield and Daniel Matsukawa. She recieved her Master’s of Music degree from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where she studied with Benjamin Kamins.
Sayuri Yamamoto, Bass
Bassist Sayuri Yamamoto came to the United States in 1992. She studied the double bass with Joelle Morton and Doug Basye at California State University, Fullerton and Dennis Trembly and Nico Abondolo at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. As an orchestra player, she has performed with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra(Japan), the Orchestra Nova, Philharmonie der Nationen(Germany), Long Beach Symphony Orchestra, Riverside Symphony Orchestra and numerous musical groups in Southern California. She is currently the Principal Bass player of the California Chamber Orchestra and the Section Bass player of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
Besides performing bass, Ms.Yamamoto has a great passion for playing Baroque music. She studied Viola da Gamba when she was in the USC Early Music Ensemble under directed by James Taylor. As a Baroque player, she frequently performs with the San Diego Bach Collegium and the San Diego Baroque Soloists as a Baroque Bassist, and has been a member of the Kensington Baroque Orchestra since 2014.
She is also very enthusiastic as a bass and piano teacher. In 2018, she was a part of the Amici Quintet to perform and coach for kids in the Safaricom Youth Symphony in Kenya, performed at Kenton College and Tumaini University in Tanzania. She has been a faculty of the San Diego Bass Fest since it started in 2015.
Yoann Taboyan, Chef
Born and raised in Valence, France, my passion and respect for food began at the age of 14. I have an extensive background that started with my training in Valence, which led to wonderful opportunities in Lyon, New York City and now San Diego. For the past 15 years, I have worked side by side with some of the most talented chefs in the industry, and I have cooked at several notable restaurants, including Le Passage in Lyon and Benoit New York, an Alain Ducasse restaurant. Now as a personal chef, I blend my wisdom, devotion and experience into every dish I create.

Mark Shapiro, Guitar
For years, Mark Shapiro has been one of southern California’s premier guitarists. He currently performs with The San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Legendary Jazz group Fattburger, and with his own ensembles. He has performed and recorded with Marvin Hamlish, Bill Conti, Billy Eckstine, David Foster, Wynona Judd, Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, Jeff Lorber, Chris Botti, John Robinson and Michael Feinstein to name just a few. As a session guitarist, Mark has played Broadway shows such as Lion King, Chicago, Avenue Q. Memphis, and Legally Blonde. He has played, written and produced for KPBS, Nissan, American Airlines, Sony, NCR and AT&T. Mark has recently served on The Board Of Directors for The San Diego Musician’s Union.
Originally from Cleveland Ohio, Mark is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati. He has lived in Los Angeles and New York City and now resides on the West Coast where he is actively performing, teaching and recording. Mark is currently available for live engagements.

Andrew Watkins, Percussion
He performs frequently with a variety of ensembles in Southern California, including Art of Elan, Luscious Noise, and The Modern Appliances. Over the years he has played extensively with many well known orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Chicago Lyric Opera, New World Symphony and the HPAC Orchestra. He has also appeared at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival, and SOAP Festival, among others.
Andrew began his formal percussion studies at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. He then went on to graduate school at Roosevelt University in Chicago and New England Conservatory in Boston. He had just begun studies at Lynn Conservatory in Boca Raton when he won his job with the San Diego Symphony. He has been taught by some of the most highly regarded percussionists in the world, including William Moersch, Ed Harrison, Vadim Karpinos, Will Hudgins, and Ted Atkatz.
Batya MacAdam-Somer, Violin
Batya MacAdam-Somer is a violinist, violist and vocalist specializing in collaboration and experimentation. Her work spans across classical, avant-garde, folk, and popular music practices, taking her to venues throughout the United States, Mexico, The United Kingdom and Europe. She has performed with ensembles and organizations including Project [BLANK], Art of Elan, San Diego New Music, Festival Vértice, wasteLAnd, Bang on A Can All-Stars, Hutchins Consort, San Diego Symphony, and the Reno Philharmonic. She is also a member of Baby Bushka, an all-female band celebrating the music of Kate Bush. Batya received her DMA in contemporary violin performance from the University of California, San Diego in 2014. She is a dedicated student of The Alexander Technique, a method for cultivating mind/body awareness and connection. Batya enjoys bringing an embodied approach into teaching, where she guides her violin/viola students to develop a grounding practice in which individual expression can emerge.

Justin Grinnell, Bass
Justin frequently performs with his own groups and as a sideman. He is often performing with San Diego’s most respected jazz artists, including Christopher Hollyday, Duncan Moore, Leonard Patton, Jim Plank, Richard Sellers, Peter Sprague, Tripp Sprague, and Joshua White.
Justin is a long-standing member of the Danny Green Trio (with pianist Danny Green and drummer Julien Cantelm), a melodic and nimble group featuring Green’s original compositions and his creative combination of Modern Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, and Classical influences. Since its inception in 2008, the trio has released five albums: With You In Mind (2009), A Thousand Ways Home (2012), After The Calm (2014), Altered Narratives (2016), and One Day It Will (2018).
In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Jazz 88.3-Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He also frequently serves as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest.
Hanah Stuart, Violin
Hanah Stuart, hailed as a performing artist who “wields a violin with unmistakable panache” (Theater Mania), is currently Acting Associate Principal 2nd Violin in the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Previously, she was a member of the Grant Park Orchestra, and Assistant Principal Second Violinist of the Utah Symphony. Ms. Stuart has served as Concertmaster of The Juilliard Orchestra, The Juilliard Chamber Orchestra and The YouTube Symphony Orchestra. She has also served various Principal roles in festival orchestras including the Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival.
Ms. Stuart’s media appearances and recordings include features on Harmony Film’s documentary The Road to Carnegie Hall, CBS’s The Early Show, 2009 Kronberg Academy’s Abschlusskonzert der Meisterschüler, and an internationally broadcast performance for Keshet Eilon’s Gala Concert in Tel Aviv, Israel. She has also been featured on HBO’s 2006 Academy Award nominated documentary, Rehearsing a Dream.
Hanah, an avid chamber musician, has been presented by the Dame Myra Hess Series and the Rembrandt Chamber Players in Chicago; the San Diego Symphony Chamber series and the Art of Elán series in San Diego; NISOM ChamberFest of Dubuque; and the NOVA and Intermezzo Chamber series in Salt Lake City.
Ms. Stuart holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from The Juilliard School where she studied with David Chan and Joel Smirnoff.
Leyla Zamora, Bassoon
Voci Angelica Trio
Straddling the genres of world folk and classical music, the trio creates an ambitious blend of cultures, reinvigorating traditional songs for contemporary audiences. Vocal harmonies elegantly intertwine with lush cello lines and percussion to create a musical fusion that transcends political and geographic borders.
The trio’s self-titled EP and second album, “Taking Flight: Live from Japan,” both invite listeners to journey through unfamiliar musical landscapes. As Voci continues to unearth musical gems, its musicians have become more attentive to the current situations in the diverse countries they explore. Live performances are a celebration of the group’s cultural wayfaring, showcasing the differences and similarities of our shared humanity. In 2017, the trio joined the roster of the Boston Celebrity Series Neighborhood Arts Program which presents free concerts for local communities. In 2013, the trio won an Iguana Music Fund grant from Club Passim to purchase a sound system for their school educational program with Young Audiences of Massachusetts. Voci Angelica’s mission has also led to the USA’s East Coast, Midwest and Southern regions; Canada; Japan; and South Korea.

Christopher Adler, Khaen and Composer
Christopher Adler is a composer, performer and improviser living in San Diego, California. His music draws upon over twenty-five years of research into the traditional musics of Thailand and Laos, and a background in mathematics. He is the world’s leading innovator in contemporary concert music for the khaen, the bamboo free-reed mouth organ of Laos and Northeast Thailand. He has performed his own compositions and traditional repertoire at Carnegie Hall, the Bang on a Can Marathon, Merkin Hall, Music at the Anthology, the Cultural Center of Chicago, and at universities across the U.S. and Southeast Asia. With his ongoing project New Musical Geographies, he has promoted the instrument by commissioning and recording new works by composers from around the world. In 2020, he released Triangulations: New music for khaen, volume one, the first compact disc dedicated to contemporary khaen solo ever produced. He is currently Professor of Music and Director of the Asian Studies Program at the University of San Diego. His works are released on many labels including Tzadik and Innova, and his performances on labels including Centaur and Vienna Modern Masters.

Carrie Dennis, Viola
Carrie Dennis is a freelance musician based out of Southern California. After living in many cities across the country, her musical family settled in Evanston, Illinois, where she grew up. She began her studies on violin before discovering her love of viola, and has never looked back! Following graduation from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, PA, she has performed and continues to perform all over the world. She lives in Los Angeles with her two twin sons, Atticus and Finneaes.
Jisun Yang, Violin
Jisun Yang is the Assistant Concertmaster of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Before coming to San Diego she was a violinist in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. She also held the position of Concertmaster of the Spoleto Festival and Opera Orchestra in 2003. Jisun is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Oberlin College Conservatory where she studied with David Cerone, David Updegraff, William Preucil, and Almita and Roland Vamos.
Ms. Yang grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and began playing violin at the age of six. In 1999 she was a recipient of a Nicolò Gagliano violin from the Stradivari Society which enabled her to appear as a soloist and chamber musician all over the United States and Europe. She has been a finalist in many competitions including the Carl Nielsen International Violin competition held in New York City. The performance, held at Merkin Hall, was broadcast live on National Public Radio. She has also won numerous competitions including the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition (2002), The American Opera Society (1997), American String Teacher’s Association Competition (1996), G.D. Searle National String Competition (1996) and the Chicago Institute of Music Concerto Competition (1995).
While Concertmaster of the Oberlin Contemporary Ensemble, Jisun Yang’s quartet recorded a CD premiering “White Silence” for quartet and orchestra by John Luther Adams. Recent chamber music collaborations include Ivan Chan, Steve Copes, Anne-Marie McDermott, Johannes Moser and Orion Weiss. Festival appearances include La Jolla Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Festival Mozaic, Encore School of Music, Spoleto Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and Bowdoin Music Festival.
Anna Skalova, Violin
Harrison Linsey, Oboe
Harrison Linsey joined the San Diego Symphony in the fall of 2015 as the orchestra’s second oboist. He has performed on oboe and English horn in the Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh and Seattle Symphonies, and as guest principal with the Sarasota Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Linsey completed his Bachelor’s degree at The Juilliard School, studying with Elaine Douvas and receiving additional instruction from Nathan Hughes, and Linda Strommen. He contributed his expertise on both oboe and English horn in the Juilliard orchestras, opera, and the school’s contemporary ensemble AXIOM. In the summers, Mr. Linsey has participated in the Marrowstone (WA) Festival, and spent three summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he was the Oboe Fellow for two years, studying with Richard Woodhams, Ariana Ghez, and Frank Rosenwein. In his spare time, he is an avid portrait photographer, specializing in headshots for musicians.
Rebecca Matayoshi, Viola
Rebecca began her musical studies on piano at age 6 and viola at 10. She holds a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory where she studied on scholarship with Marcus Thompson. She completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign under the tutelage of Masumi Rostad and Rudolf Haken as the Edward J. Krolick full-scholarship recipient. She has served as principal viola at the Pacific Music Festival and has performed at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and the Karen Tuttle Viola Workshop, among many others.
Originally from Chicago, IL, Rebecca enjoys hiking, photography, reading, exploring the world of food, craft beer and wine, and performing as the pianist/keyboardist for her 80’s cover band, The Modern Appliances.
Yara Lamers, Chef
In 2013, Yara took over “Casa do Joao” as the Executive Chef, a restaurant that was awarded “Best Central-East Restaurant” in Brazil that year. For the past 4 years, Yara’s repertoire has flourished working under Chef Jason Mcleod’s supervision and mentorship. Yara became part of Chef Jason’s loyal team of chefs at Ironside Fish & Oyster and helped open many CH Projects restaurants, including “Born & Raised” in Little Italy – specializing in Aged prime cuts of meat – and also considered the best Steak House in San Diego last year.
In 2016, Yara was a semi-finalist on the “Chef’s Roll” Contest of more than 300 chefs from all over the US. She stood out by mixing Brazilian and American ingredients in her creations.
The skills she gained working for CH Projects and her passion for cooking has brought her to take the next step of opening her own business of Private Dinners & Events. Chef Yara continues to follow her culinary dreams using love as her main ingredient, just like her Grandma taught her.
Andrew Hayhurst, Cello
After graduating from Yale, Mr. Hayhurst performed regularly with the Los Angeles Opera and Los Angeles Philharmonic, including on their 2015 Asia tour with Gustavo Dudamel. He also recorded in many of Hollywood’s major studios and was the Associate Principal Cello of the San Bernardino Symphony.
As a chamber musician Mr. Hayhurst has collaborated with members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and he has been coached by members of the Tokyo, Juilliard, Concord and Emerson Quartets. While at the University of Michigan he formed a piano trio that won the Midwest and Michigan MTNA Chamber Music Competitions in 2010. He has participated in the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, the Geneva Music Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
Mr. Hayhurst has performed over National Public Radio and on Los Angeles’s KMozart. He has been awarded scholarships from the Colburn School of Performing Arts and the Santa Barbara Fé Bland Foundation. His primary teachers have been Richard Aaron, Robert deMaine, Aldo Parisot, and Richard Naill.
Tina Chong, Piano
Since her orchestral debut at the age of nine, Tina has appeared as a guest soloist with orchestras throughout the world including the Calgary Philharmonic, the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Under the management of Jeunesses Musicales du Canada, Tina has gone on several whirlwind concert tours throughout Canada. Her recital career has also brought her to the Kennedy Center, the Sala Chopin, and the National Arts Centre. Tina’s playing has been described as, “… mature and yet fresh, imbued with tradition and yet inhabited by individuality, the marks of an artist” (The Herald Times). She is a prize winner of major international competitions, including the Montreal International Musical Competition, Canadian Music Competition, Jacques Klein Piano Competition, and Aspen Music Festival Competition.
Tina is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied under the guidance of Angela Cheng. She has also worked closely with artist-teachers Robert McDonald, Jerome Lowenthal, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Julian Martin, Arie Vardi, and Menahem Pressler. Tina is now a doctoral candidate in piano performance at Indiana University with minors in music education and historical performance. While in Indiana, she studied under the tutelage of her mentor, Arnaldo Cohen. Tina is a recipient of the Indiana University Chancellor’s Fellowship and multiple artistic grants from the Canada Council for the Arts.
A native of Banff, Canada, Tina currently serves on faculty at San Diego State University and subs regularly with the San Diego Symphony. Tina’s greatest loves our chamber music and dancing with her two young daughters.
Jake Kalani, Chef
Caterina Longhi, Viola
Prior to moving to San Diego, Ms. Longhi was a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and served as principal viola with The Juilliard Orchestra, New Juilliard Ensemble, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Ms. Longhi has performed with the Colorado Symphony and the New World Symphony, and attended The New York String Orchestra Seminar, Taos School of Music chamber program, Heifetz Institute, Perlman Music Program and Music Academy of the West.
As a chamber musician, Ms. Longhi participated in Juilliard’s Chamberfest Program and was also invited to perform as part of Juilliard’s Transatlantic Music Project, collaborating with musicians from Cologne, Germany. Her chamber music coaches have included members of the Brentano, Borromeo, Emerson, Juilliard, Orion and Takács quartets. In 2012 Ms. Longhi performed the Brahms G minor Piano Quartet with Lynn Harrell and Daniel Heifetz and was also invited to perform at the Russian Embassy in Washington D.C. as one of six alumni of the Heifetz Institute.
Chris Ruhl, Chef
Born and raised in Monterey, Chris found his passion for the kitchen early in life. Always fascinated by the spices in his home pantry.
At 21, he attended Cal Poly Pomona and received a Bachelor’s of Science in Hospitality Management. Chris then applied and was admitted to the CIA at Greystone where he trained for a year at the school and then worked for a year as a Cook and Manager.
He moved to San Diego in 2016 and landed a job working at Trust Restaurant, the first restaurant he had ever worked at. He opened Fort Oak in Mission Hills as the sous chef 3 years later. A year later, Chris returned to Trust as the executive sous chef. Trust is a New American restaurant with a wood-only fired grill, hand made pasta, and modern takes on classic flavor combinations. We cook with bold flavors, lots of pickled vegetables and textures.
Rob Thorsen, Bass
Jazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader and with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet, Gilbert Castellanos, Charles McPherson, Steph Johnson and a host of others.
He has released six recordings as a leader, the most recent release, “Bass is the Space – Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White, Steph Johnson, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances.
Jazz education plays an important role in his career. He teaches at Gilbert Castellanos Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, the UCSD Jazz Camp, The La Jolla Athenaeums “The World Of Jazz” as well as teaching privately. In 2010 Thorsen created “Jazz an American Art Form,” a highly successful jazz educational program that features his quartet and is presented to over 8,000 students annually in primarily underserved communities. He is also involved with and performs with the Voices of Our City Choir, a soul-jazz choir created by his wife Steph Johnson for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego.
